HawkHead Hospital - Welcome!227 viewsFor sale. One Hospital. As is condition, no reasonable offer refused.

PlayGround Mono112 viewsThe Kids' PlayGround out front: looking somewhat lonely and creepy at night.

DayRoom Lonely152 viewsInside the ward all is quiet and peaceful - this dayroom seems a little lonely and sad.
The street-lighting pours in the window like sunbeams - almost, but not quite the right colour.

The Model Map42 viewsIf every cloud has a silver lining - this site's is that the sales centre (where they are desperately trying to flog off their new houses) has very detailed models and maps of where we are!
We talk with the salesman for a while, he tells us that when the project first started each flat was for sale for at least £140,000... Today he was pushing us to take one for £100,000 and I got the impression we could have talked him down. Economic Recession = a buyer's market.
Anyways, looking at this cute wee model (with the listed buildings in white), I identified the following:
1 - The original administration building
2 - The medical superintendent's residences
3 - The kitchens
4 - The original X-Ray pavilion and wards (http://www.turbozutek.f2s.com/thumbnails.php?album=60)
5 - The Acute Admissions (Triage) building
6 - The Panda Centre
7 - The Women and Children Unit
8 - Ross House (the subject of today's assize)
* - Fuck knows, these currently don't exist or have been knocked down.

The Panda Centre104 viewsOutside the Panda Centre - for some reason, it's locked tight and totally solid.
There is no way in that we can find!
Oh well, better just go home, eh?

The Dead Bed94 viewsInside the Mortuary COR (Chapel Of Rest) - looks like it was once a fairly nice place.

Outside - 1 Around Front241 viewsThe X-Ray / Observation Ward building: the first building to close!

GateHouse141 viewsThe GateHouse - inside here is a raised glass counter; this allowed the receptionist to take an infected persons details while staying out the way of the person's breath and (yuck) spit! This helped prevent the disease being passed on.

Daily Routine188 viewsThe ward routine is published on the wall for all to see: in bed for eight o'clock!

The Dead Person84 viewsFortunately they left a dead person in the chillers for me to set-up this photograph.
Judging by the amount of decomposition - I'd say she's faking!

1Location - Ross House34 viewsWe move onto Ross House - a massive Art Deco BLOCK which smacks of originally being nurses' accommodation perhaps?
Before it closed it was a seminar centre with meeting rooms, Medical Records, office space and the IT base for the hospital.

Looking Down The Ward183 viewsWoah!! The mega-flash fires down the ward, almost obliterating all detail!
Actually, I quite like this over-exposed effect: everything looks new and clean.

Outside - Entrance208 viewsThe X-RAY Department: once upon a time the only sure way to test the extent of a TB infection! X-Ray plates would be taken and a Doctor could asses the amount of damage by the 'shadowing' around the lungs.
This unit closed early on, in the 80's - as the hospital moved away from being a TB / Fever hospital and focused on other fields of medicine.

The Crest33 viewsThe HawkHead Crest*. Needs some touch up in the painting dept. but apart from that, very complete!!
All this looking at the exterior is interesting and all, but as of yet we haven't seen a single viable way inside which doesn't involve extensive climbing up a very visible building!
We press on... I have an idea.
*I think.

The Memory Tree111 viewsThe 'memory tree' greets us on the first room we enter!

The Slab84 viewsTwo of these very simple slabs were inside the Mortuary Room itself - it's clear that this was a 'clean up and display' mortuary only, rather than a pathology or clinical autopsy mortuary.
I find this slightly strange for what was originally a fever hospital, but can only think perhaps the mortuary was re-fitted at some point?

Outside - PGCC around the back256 viewsAround the back of the X-Ray building: G expertly scans for any sign of an entrance.
He is not disappointed!

Clear Night115 viewsIt's a stunning night!

Hoyle Hoist149 viewsIn the middle of the ward, a Hoyle Hoist waits.
And it still works (yeah, we took shots on it... so what!?) :-D

In The Tunnels34 viewsAnd we are in.
Once you get inside the tunnel network; you have the run of the place! There's a water leak down here and the air quality sucks big time; we head for the upper levels.

Panda Bog Shot111 viewsAhhh, the good old bog shot!! Gotta have at least one, right?
Well, look again at that toilet seat: that's for like, four year olds! Did this place really cater to kids as young as FOUR!?

The Stained Glass87 viewsA closer, better lit look at the stained glass. It's such a shame some little arsehole has decided to damage this.
Interestingly, this is a very modern stained glass window - it's on a hinge and can be opened for fresh air (if it's warm out) - note the catch at the top.

Outside - Windows235 viewsHmmmm...

XRay Building Around Back112 views

Lone Buxton158 viewsA lonely Buxton waits: affixed to the floor in a cupboard just off the ward.
This was a little weird - did someone sit here? In a cupboard? A cupboard with no windows and a lock on the door!
If so - Why!?

Seminar - Harold Shipman34 viewsWow, Harry Shipman once spoke here!! :-P
How handy would access to this key-board with EVERY key for EVERY part of the hospital been a couple of years ago!!?? Priceless then, but not much help now.

The Smoking Room120 viewsInside the hospital 'smoking room' - somewhat ironic with all the anti-smoking 'sheep' around!
Oh how we have come - no smoking anywhere in a hospital now.

The Chillers91 viewsWith capacity for only nine bodies, this smaller modern fridge awaits removal / sale.
And that concludes the (brief) tour!

Corridor - Window195 viewsInside the building - this place really SHOWS the fact it's been out of use nearly 20 years!

XRay Front Mono135 views

Obliterated Ward178 viewsAlong the other side of the Ward. I can't decide if this was a nice place to stay or not...
Anyone care to comment?

Reception Desk35 viewsAt central reception we ponder the 'caution CCTV' sign, until we notice that some prankster scamp has turned all the cameras to face the wall.
Niiiice!

Impending Vending Of Doooom!106 viewsThis machine is out of order and makes no apology.

Corridor - The Sinking Feeling204 viewsWell, I guess when you turn off the heat for nearly two decades, you gotta expect a little damage to the all wood floor.
This place has held up pretty well actually, considering.
We tread lightly over the floor!

Parker Bath157 viewsJust off the ward is a hydraulic powered Parker Bath. Given this and the Hoyle lifts lying around, this must have been a high-dependency or low-mobility ward, hey?

Down The Hall31 viewsRow after row after row of empty rooms off this corridor. The floor above, the same - the floor below; near identical.
The clean out of this facility was 100% perfect (unlike the Panda centre): literally nothing of any interest whatsoever has been left behind.

Dopey Watches115 viewsDopey's beady wee eyes follow us as we make the decision to tackle the upstairs first.
There's a strange feeling here: like we are not totally alone.

Corridor - Tunnels Entrance219 viewsLadder leading off to the service tunnels. The tunnels are not classic 'wander around' steam tunnels, unfortunately, they are only 3 foot tall and full of pipes!

The Mortuary154 viewsThe Mortuary building! As this was a high fatality rate hospital (at least in its early years) the mortuary is a large and solid building.
